Racing | Formula 1 | 1998 Japanese Grand Prix — Häkkinen Wins His First Championship at Suzuka

On 1 November 1998, the Formula One title contest reached Suzuka Circuit for the season’s final round, with Mika Häkkinen seeking his first Drivers’ Championship and Michael Schumacher still able to deny him.

Schumacher put his Ferrari on pole with a lap of 1:36.293, only 0.178 seconds ahead of Häkkinen’s McLaren-Mercedes, while David Coulthard and Eddie Irvine filled the second row.

The race used Suzuka’s 5.860 km figure-eight Grand Prix configuration, a layout whose crossing, linked bends and narrow final chicane made the Japanese finale a precise test of both speed and traffic management.

The first start was aborted when Jarno Trulli stalled, and before the next attempt Schumacher also stalled; under the restart procedure he moved to the back of the grid, while Häkkinen retained his front-row place.

At the eventual start Häkkinen led Irvine, Heinz-Harald Frentzen and Coulthard, while Schumacher worked forward from the rear and rose to third during the pit-stop cycle as the championship remained unresolved.

Grandprix.com reports that Schumacher later suffered a right-rear tire failure after running over debris; Formula One’s final classification records his Ferrari as a non-finisher after 31 laps, without a post-race change to the result.

Häkkinen completed 51 laps in 1:27:22.535, beating Irvine by 6.491 seconds and Coulthard by 27.662 seconds, and the ten points for victory raised his final season total to 100 against Schumacher’s 86.

That finish made Häkkinen Formula One World Drivers’ Champion for the first time, turning Suzuka’s final chequered flag into the decisive moment of both the race and the 1998 season.
