Racing | Formula 1 | 1999 European Grand Prix — Herbert Wins from 14th at Nürburgring
kevin
On 26 September 1999, Formula One’s European Grand Prix came to the Nürburgring with four drivers still close enough to shape the championship and intermittent rain poised to disrupt every strategic plan.
The race used the 4.556 km Grand Prix configuration employed from 1997 through 2001, including the Veedol chicane before the start-and-finish straight, and the event ran for 66 completed laps after being scheduled for 67.
Heinz-Harald Frentzen took pole for Jordan-Mugen-Honda in 1:19.910, while Johnny Herbert qualified his Stewart-Ford 14th in 1:21.379, immediately ahead of teammate Rubens Barrichello in 15th; Jarno Trulli started 10th for Prost-Peugeot.
As showers crossed the circuit, the lead changed through retirements and pit-stop cycles: Frentzen stopped with an electrical problem, David Coulthard left the road after taking over, Giancarlo Fisichella spun, and Ralf Schumacher lost time with a puncture while leading.
Herbert had begun on the harder dry-weather tyre for a longer opening stint, and when heavier rain returned near his planned stop, Stewart fitted wet-weather tyres while several rivals remained on slicks.
That call moved Herbert into contention at precisely the moment the leading order broke apart, and after the circuit began to dry he protected the advantage through his final change back to dry tyres.
Formula One’s final classification records Herbert completing 66 laps in 1:41:54.314, with Trulli second 22.618 seconds behind and Barrichello third at 22.865 seconds, giving Stewart two cars on the podium.
The victory was Herbert’s third and final Formula One win and the only Grand Prix victory achieved by Stewart Grand Prix before the Ford-backed team became Jaguar Racing for 2000.
