豪雨の後の川で、ルリたちは砂金よりも多くの見慣れない鉱物を拾う。第9話「190万トンのタイムカプセル」が向かうのは、その違和感の上流だ。旧桂ヶ谷貯水池堰堤を写したカットでは、古いコンクリートの壁が単なる背景ではなく、人が水の流れを変えた証拠として立っている。川砂は山から来るとは限らない。かつて貯められ、工事で動かされ、雨で再び流れ出した土砂もまた、石の分布を書き換える。苔と染みの残る堰堤を正面から見ると、190万トンという数字が初めて質量を持つ。ここでは石を持ち帰ることより、壁の高さと水路の向きを確かめたい。足元の小石を一つ見たあと堰堤を見上げると、その粒がどこから運ばれたのか、風景全体が問い返してくる。
