American Graffiti | Petaluma High School — Empty Corridors at Fair Street

The freshman hop needed two schools, and this is the one that plays the outside. Petaluma High School at 201 Fair Street — a campus completed in 1935 on some twenty-four acres south-west of downtown — supplied the exteriors, the corridors, the bathroom scene and the parking lot on the 300 block of Broadway where the cars queue up for the dance.
The corridor is the shot worth coming for. Curt walks the halls while the hop thumps away somewhere behind a wall, and the school is doing what schools do at night: holding a great deal of empty air under fluorescent light. Lucas lets it run long. It is the film's clearest statement of its own subject — a boy who has already graduated, moving through a building that has finished with him, listening to a party he is too old for.
The campus is still a working high school, so this is a look-from-the-pavement pilgrimage rather than a walk-in. Fair Street runs quiet, the 1930s frontage reads clearly from the kerb, and the Broadway lot is still a lot. Come on a weekday at the last bell and you get the exact inverse of the scene: corridors full, doors banging, everyone with somewhere to be. Then wait twenty minutes. The building goes back to the way Lucas shot it, and you understand why he pointed a camera down an empty hall and left it there.
Filming details cross-checked against location records for the production; the gym interiors were shot elsewhere, in Mill Valley. Photograph is an illustrative American high-school exterior via Pexels — the campus itself is best photographed from Fair Street.
