American Graffiti | Petaluma Boulevard North — Four Lanes and Nowhere to Be

The shoot began on Fourth Street in San Rafael and nearly died there. Merchants complained about the nights, the noise and the closed lanes, and the city withdrew its welcome after the first days of filming. George Lucas moved the whole production forty miles north to Petaluma, and that accident of local politics is why the film's main drag is this one. Watch closely and you can see the seam: the San Rafael footage that survived runs one way, and Petaluma Boulevard North runs two, headlights sliding past each other in opposite directions all night.

Cruising was the point. Nobody in the film is going anywhere. They circle — past the theatre, down to the light, around, back — and the boulevard's width is what makes the circling legible. You can still drive it. The storefronts have turned over several times, but the block faces, the brick parapets and the transom windows above the doors are the same ones that filled Lucas's frames in the summer of 1972, and the Petaluma Historic Commercial District listing has kept them that way.

Come in May and the town does the work for you. Petaluma's annual salute to the film fills the boulevard with hot rods and shuts the lanes for a cruise, which is the one weekend a year the street matches its own footage. Any other night, stand at the Washington Street corner after dark and watch a single car take the turn. The sound is the same. That is the whole film in one pass.
