Racing | Formula 1 | 1977 Argentine Grand Prix — Scheckter Wins on Walter Wolf Racing’s Debut

On 9 January 1977, a new name entered the Formula 1 World Championship at Buenos Aires. Walter Wolf Racing arrived with one black-and-gold Wolf-Ford WR1 for South African driver Jody Scheckter—and left its first championship Grand Prix as a winner.

The race used the Autódromo Municipal de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires, now called the Autódromo Oscar y Juan Gálvez. Its Circuit No. 15 measured 5.968 kilometres and joined the long Recta del Fondo and Recta del Lago to the infield turns; the 53-lap race therefore covered 316.304 kilometres.

Reigning champion James Hunt put his McLaren-Ford on pole in 1 minute 48.680 seconds. Scheckter qualified only eleventh in 1 minute 50.760 seconds, behind both McLarens, both Brabhams, the Ferraris, and several other established teams.

John Watson’s Brabham led the opening ten laps before Hunt passed him. Hunt later retired after a suspension failure, and Watson’s own suspension trouble yielded the lead to his teammate Carlos Pace.

Scheckter worked forward while faster starters fell away. He passed Mario Andretti’s Lotus for third, inherited second when Watson retired, and overtook an exhausted Pace on lap 48.

The Wolf completed all 53 laps in 1 hour 40 minutes 11.190 seconds. Pace finished second, 43.240 seconds behind, and local favourite Carlos Reutemann placed third for Ferrari at 46.020 seconds; Formula 1’s official archive and the independent classification agree, with no later penalty changing the podium.

The result was larger than a surprise win. Walter Wolf Racing had won its first World Championship start with its new WR1, designed by Harvey Postlethwaite, while Scheckter had climbed from the sixth row to give a new constructor an immediate place in Formula 1 history.
