The Lord of the Rings | Waiau River — The Fellowship Rows South

Three boats slide away from Lothlórien, carrying the Fellowship between forested banks toward a breaking point none of them can yet see. The Waiau River gave the Anduin its moving surface in the trilogy, especially in the opening aerial view of the journey. At Rainbow Reach, the river runs broad and cold beneath Fiordland’s high country, its colour changing with cloud and current. There are no stone kings on the banks; the Argonath belonged to another location and to digital craft. What remains here is simpler—the pull of water, a footbridge, and dense green country closing behind anyone who crosses. Watch the current for a minute and departure stops looking heroic.
