Nintendo's American subsidiary was incorporated in New York State in 1980 and re-founded in Washington State in 1982, the new company absorbing the old one.
It nearly did not survive the gap between those two dates.
Radar Scope, the arcade game the subsidiary had bet on, did not sell, and the unsold cabinets sat in a rented warehouse in Tukwila, south of Seattle.
The fix was a conversion. (Shigeru Miyamoto) designed Donkey Kong in Kyoto, and the stranded cabinets were rebuilt to run it.
Donkey Kong's carpenter was called Jumpman in Japan and needed an American name.
The famous version comes from David Sheff's Game Over (1993). The landlord, Mario Segale, arrived over unpaid rent, berated the subsidiary's president 荒川實 (Minoru Arakawa) in front of the staff, and left them their answer.
Sheff misspelled the surname as Segali, and the misspelling travelled for years.
Don James, who managed the warehouse in 1981 and later became an executive vice-president, has told it differently. In 2012 and again in 2018 he said the name was picked as an office joke, because Segale was such a recluse that none of them had ever met him.
Both accounts cannot be true, and no one has reconciled them.
宮本茂 confirmed in 2015 that the character is named after Segale, without endorsing either story, and that is as far as the record goes.
Segale would not trade on it. Asked by the Seattle Times in 1993, he answered: "You might say I'm still waiting for my royalty checks."
He died on 27 October 2018, aged 84, and his obituary said he had always ducked the notoriety and wanted to be known for what he built.
The subsidiary moved from Tukwila into a new Redmond building by December 1982 and has stayed in Redmond since. The campus at 4600 150th Avenue NE is closed to the public, and the Tukwila warehouse where the argument did or did not happen carries no marker.

You might say I'm still waiting for my royalty checks."
