Technology History | ニンテンドーミュージアム, 宇治 — The Factory Where Broken Consoles Were Sent

Before this was a museum it was where you posted a dead console.

Nintendo built the plant in 1969 as 宇治工場 and renamed it 宇治小倉工場 in 1988, once the larger Uji plant at 槇島町 was up and extended.

Two things happened inside. トランプ and 花札 were manufactured, and a service centre took in game hardware for repair.

Both moved to the Makishima plant in November 2016, after which the buildings were used as a warehouse.

In June 2021 Nintendo announced that the site would become a 資料館, a display facility for the products it had sold, and aimed at completion during the year to March 2024.

The name ニンテンドーミュージアム was announced in a Nintendo Direct on 14 September 2023, and the doors opened on 2 October 2024 — roughly a year after the original target.

The renovation kept the old 宇治小倉工場 sign.

Admission is ¥3,300 for adults, ¥2,200 for secondary students and ¥1,100 for primary; entry is by dated lottery ticket applied for up to three months ahead, and the museum closes on Tuesdays.

It is a five-minute walk east of 近鉄小倉駅 and eight from JR小倉駅.

The first exhibition hall runs the products in order, hanafuda at one end and Nintendo Switch at the other, which is the same distance the building itself travelled.

ここが博物館になる前、壊れたゲーム機の送り先はこの建物だった。

任天堂がこの工場を建てたのは1969年、名称は「宇治工場」。のちに槇島町の宇治工場が建設・増改築されたのにともない、1988年に「宇治小倉工場」へ改称している。

中で行われていたことは二つ。トランプと花札の製造、そしてサービスセンターとしてのゲーム機修理業務である。

どちらも2016年11月に宇治工場へ移管され、以後この建屋は倉庫として使われていた。

2021年6月、任天堂は跡地と建屋を過去の商品を展示する資料館施設として利用すると発表した。完成目標は2023年度（2024年3月期）だった。

「ニンテンドーミュージアム」という正式名称は2023年9月14日のNintendo Directで発表され、開業は2024年10月2日——当初目標からおよそ1年遅れである。

改修後も、旧「宇治小倉工場」の看板は残された。

料金は大人3,300円、中学・高校生2,200円、小学生1,100円。日時指定の抽選制で、来館の3か月前から受付が始まり、休館日は毎週火曜日。

近鉄小倉駅の東口から徒歩5分、JR小倉駅からは徒歩8分。

第1展示棟は歴代商品を順に並べる。片端が花札、もう片端がNintendo Switch——この建物自身が歩いた距離とちょうど同じだ。
