Technology History | 丸福樓, 鍵屋町 — Eighty-Eight Years of Paper Came First

A circle enclosing the character 福 is set into the brick two storeys up on the corner of this building.

That mark is a company name: 丸福, maru-fuku, circle and fortune.

Nintendo's own corporate outline dates its founding to September 1889 in 下京区, Kyoto, where 山内房治郎 (Yamauchi Fusajiro) began making 花札 hanafuda — flower cards, printed and finished by hand.

鍵屋町, the block facing 正面通 where this building stands, is the ground that both the founding family and the hotel now on the site call 創業地.

The building is four decades younger than the business. It was completed in 1930 and served as head office and as the Yamauchi family's home at the same time.

Paper was the product for a very long time. Playing cards followed the hanafuda from 1902, plastic playing cards arrived in 1953 as the first made in Japan by the company's own account, and Disney-licensed decks in 1959.

Nintendo did not sell a home console until 1977, eighty-eight years after the cards.

The corporation itself was registered in November 1947 as 株式会社丸福, at a different Kyoto address in 東山区今熊野東瓦町 rather than here. It became 任天堂骨牌株式会社 in 1951 and 任天堂株式会社 in 1963.

Card production never stopped; it moved to Nintendo's Uji plant in November 2016.

The family never sold this building either.

Yamauchi interests reopened it on 1 April 2022 as 丸福樓 (Marufukuro), an eighteen-room hotel, with 安藤忠雄 (Tadao Ando) supervising both the new wing and the restoration of the three original reinforced-concrete blocks.

The 1930 exterior came through intact, which is why the roundel is still there to photograph.

正面通 is a public street and the corner reads from the pavement; the rooms, and the library the family built inside, are for guests.

この建物の角、二階分の高さの煉瓦壁に、「福」の字を丸で囲んだ紋章がはめ込まれている。

これは社名そのものだ。丸福（まるふく）——丸に福。

任天堂自身の会社概要は、創業を明治22年（1889年）9月、京都市下京区としている。創業者の山内房治郎が、手作業で花札の製造を始めた。

この建物が建つ正面通沿いの鍵屋町は、創業家も、いま同じ敷地に建つホテルも「創業地」と呼ぶ場所である。

建物のほうは事業より四十年ほど若い。1930年（昭和5年）竣工で、本社であると同時に山内家の住居でもあった。

紙が主力だった時期は非常に長い。花札に続いて1902年からトランプ、1953年には同社の言う「日本初のプラスチック製トランプ」、1959年にはディズニーキャラクターを使ったトランプ。

任天堂が家庭用テレビゲーム機を発売するのは1977年、カードから数えて88年後になる。

法人としての設立は1947年（昭和22年）11月、商号は株式会社丸福で、登記地はここではなく京都市東山区今熊野東瓦町だった。1951年に任天堂骨牌株式会社、1963年に任天堂株式会社となる。

カードの製造は途絶えていない。2016年11月に宇治工場へ移されただけである。

建物も手放されなかった。

山内家側は2022年4月1日、ここを全18室のホテル「丸福樓」として開いた。安藤忠雄が新築棟だけでなく、既存の鉄筋コンクリート3棟の改修も設計監修している。

1930年の外観はほぼそのまま残った。だから角の紋章がいまも写真に撮れる。

正面通は公道で、角は歩道から見える。客室と、創業家がつくった館内のライブラリーは宿泊者のためのものだ。
