Racing | Formula 1 | 1991 Brazilian Grand Prix — Senna Wins at Home for the First Time

On 24 March 1991, Ayrton Senna began the Brazilian Grand Prix from pole at São Paulo’s Autódromo José Carlos Pace, the circuit still universally known as Interlagos.

The race was the second round of the sixteen-event Formula One World Championship and carried a personal gap in Senna’s record, because seven previous attempts had not produced a victory in his home Grand Prix.

Senna qualified the McLaren-Honda in 1:16.392, ahead of Riccardo Patrese’s Williams-Renault at 1:16.775 and Nigel Mansell’s second Williams at 1:16.843.

He led from the start, but Mansell stayed close through the first stint and resumed the pursuit after a delayed tyre stop, reducing the gap to 2.97 seconds by lap 42.

Mansell later made another stop after a cut tyre and retired after completing 59 laps when the Williams transmission failed, leaving Patrese as Senna’s principal challenger.

Senna had already lost fourth gear about twenty laps from the finish, and with seven laps remaining he also lost third and fifth, so he kept the McLaren in sixth gear as light rain made the circuit increasingly difficult.

Patrese reduced a gap of roughly forty seconds after lap 60, but he was also experiencing intermittent gear-selection trouble and finished 2.991 seconds behind.

Senna completed all 71 laps in 1:38:28.128, with Patrese second and Gerhard Berger third for McLaren-Honda, 5.416 seconds behind the winner; the official classification records no later penalty changing that podium.

The result was Senna’s first victory in the Brazilian Grand Prix and his second win from the opening two races of the 1991 season, establishing a moment tied specifically to the home circuit rather than a general career milestone.

The event used Interlagos’s 4.325-kilometre, fifteen-turn, anti-clockwise configuration introduced for Formula One’s 1990 return to the venue and retained through 1995.
