Racing | Formula 1 | 1990 Japanese Grand Prix — Piquet Wins as Senna Secures His Second Title

On 21 October 1990, the Formula One World Championship arrived at Suzuka Circuit for the season’s penultimate round with Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost still contesting the drivers’ title.

Senna put the McLaren-Honda on pole in 1:36.996, with Prost’s Ferrari alongside after a 1:37.228 lap.

The title rivals made contact at the first corner and both retired before completing the opening lap; this account assigns neither fault nor intent, recording only the contact and its official sporting consequence.

Because only the Australian finale remained, their double retirement left Prost unable to overtake Senna in the championship, securing Senna’s second Drivers’ Championship.

The race continued without its two front-row starters, and Nelson Piquet moved into the lead for Benetton-Ford after Nigel Mansell’s Ferrari retired following its mid-race pit stop.

Piquet completed 53 laps in 1:34:36.824, with teammate Roberto Moreno second by 7.223 seconds and Aguri Suzuki third for Lola-Lamborghini by 22.469 seconds; the official classification records no later penalty changing that podium.

Suzuki’s result made him the first Japanese driver to stand on a Formula One podium, achieved before the home crowd at Suzuka.

The event used Suzuka’s 5.860-kilometre figure-eight configuration, the 1987–2002 layout in which the back straight crosses above the earlier part of the lap.

The season’s official standings closed with Senna on 78 points and Prost on 71, while Piquet’s victory here began a two-race sweep completed at Adelaide.
