Racing | Formula 1 | 1983 South African Grand Prix — Piquet Secures His Second Title at Kyalami

On Saturday, 15 October 1983, the grid formed at Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit for the Southern Sun Hotels Grand Prix, the fifteenth and final round of the Formula One World Championship.

Nelson Piquet arrived two points behind Alain Prost, qualified his Brabham-BMW second to Patrick Tambay’s Ferrari, and seized the lead at the start while teammate Riccardo Patrese moved into second.

René Arnoux’s Ferrari retired after nine laps, and Prost’s Renault stopped with turbo trouble on lap 35, leaving Piquet needing only to bring the BMW-powered BT52B to the finish.

The contemporary Motor Sport report records that Piquet then reduced his pace to protect the car, allowing Patrese past on lap 60 and later yielding to Niki Lauda and Andrea de Cesaris as they continued to race for the win.

Lauda’s McLaren lost power with four laps remaining, so Patrese completed all 77 laps in 1 hour 33 minutes 25.708 seconds, de Cesaris finished 9.319 seconds behind, and Piquet took third at 21.969 seconds.

Those four points raised Piquet’s season total to 59 against Prost’s 57, securing Piquet’s second Drivers’ Championship; Formula One’s technical history identifies him as the first turbo-powered world champion, achieved with Brabham’s BMW-engined BT52.

John Watson was black-flagged on lap 18 after retaking his grid position by overtaking on the parade lap, but the disqualification did not change the podium or championship result.

The race used Kyalami’s 4.104-kilometre, nine-corner clockwise circuit widened in 1968 and retained through 1988, not the shorter post-1989 layouts or today’s 4.529-kilometre course.
