Racing | Formula 1 | 1985 Portuguese Grand Prix — Senna Converts Pole into His First Win at Estoril
kevin
On Sunday, 21 April 1985, rain covered the grid at Autódromo do Estoril as the second round of the Formula One World Championship prepared to start.
Ayrton Senna had put the number 12 Lotus-Renault on pole with a lap of 1:21.007, 0.413 seconds faster than Alain Prost’s McLaren-TAG and more than a second ahead of his Lotus teammate Elio de Angelis.
Senna retained the lead at the start while de Angelis moved into second, and the Brazilian began separating himself from a field struggling to remain on the circuit in the persistent rain.
Prost retired after spinning on lap 30, Michele Alboreto later passed de Angelis for second, and Patrick Tambay advanced to third as Senna continued at the front.
The race reached its two-hour limit after 67 laps, with Senna completing the distance in 2 hours 28.006 seconds and Alboreto the only other driver on the lead lap, 62.978 seconds behind.
Tambay was classified third for Renault one lap down, followed by de Angelis, Nigel Mansell and Stefan Bellof in the remaining points-paying positions.
Senna also recorded the official fastest lap, 1:44.121 on lap 15, so his pole position, victory, fastest lap and uninterrupted race lead formed a complete sweep of the competitive milestones.
This was Senna’s first Formula One World Championship victory, achieved in his second race for Lotus, and independent historical sources agree with the official classification and identify no later penalty that altered the podium.
The result was also Lotus’s first Formula One win since the death of team founder Colin Chapman in December 1982, giving the Estoril race significance for both driver and constructor.
The Grand Prix used Estoril’s original 4.350-kilometre circuit, the configuration retained from 1984 through 1993 before the Gancho chicane was added in 1994.
The pin uses a published circuit-map geotag inside the Alcabideche venue, and the accompanying public-domain diagram depicts the precise 1984–1993 layout rather than Estoril’s later configuration.
