Racing | Formula 1 | 1984 Portuguese Grand Prix — Lauda Wins the Title by Half a Point at Estoril

On Sunday, 21 October 1984, Formula One’s title contenders reached the grid at Autódromo do Estoril for the sixteenth and final round of the World Championship, the first Portuguese Grand Prix to count toward the series since 1960.

McLaren teammates Niki Lauda and Alain Prost arrived with the Drivers’ Championship still undecided, so the race would turn their season-long contest into a single-place calculation at the finish.

Nelson Piquet put his Brabham-BMW on pole with 1:21.703, Prost qualified second in the McLaren-TAG, and Lauda began only eleventh after setting 1:23.183.

Prost recovered from running third at the first corner, passed Nigel Mansell and then Keke Rosberg, and took the lead on lap nine while Lauda worked through the midfield.

Lauda reached third on lap 33, and after Mansell spun twice late in the race, the Austrian moved into the second place he needed behind his teammate.

Prost completed all 70 laps in 1 hour 41 minutes 11.753 seconds, Lauda finished 13.425 seconds behind, and Ayrton Senna placed third for Toleman-Hart at 20.042 seconds.

The six points for second raised Lauda’s final total to 72 against Prost’s 71.5, giving Lauda his third Drivers’ Championship by half a point even though Prost had won the race.

Lauda also set the official fastest lap, 1:22.996 on lap 51, and the official and independent final classifications agree on the podium with no later penalty changing the title result.

The race used Estoril’s original 4.350-kilometre clockwise Grand Prix circuit, before the Gancho chicane added in 1994 and before later alterations to the opening turns.
