Racing | Formula 1 | 1986 Mexican Grand Prix — Berger Gives Benetton Its First Win

On 12 October 1986, Gerhard Berger started the Mexican Grand Prix from fourth in Benetton’s number 20 B186-BMW, on the front half of a grid pointed toward the long main straight of the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez.

Formula One had returned to Mexico City after a 16-year absence, using a rebuilt 4.421-kilometre, 14-turn circuit that retained the fast banked Peraltada but shortened the old Magdalena Mixhuca course.

Ayrton Senna held pole in the Lotus-Renault at 1 minute 16.990 seconds, with Nelson Piquet and Nigel Mansell next in their Williams-Hondas; Berger’s 1:17.609 placed the Benetton fourth.

The race turned on tires rather than a late pass: independent reporting records that the Goodyear runners stopped as their tires blistered in the heat, while Berger judged that his Pirellis could complete the distance without a change.

That choice left the Benetton ahead after the other leading cars returned from the pits, and Berger completed all 68 laps in 1 hour 33 minutes 18.700 seconds.

The official final classification places Alain Prost’s McLaren-TAG second, 25.438 seconds behind, and Senna third, 52.513 seconds behind; Piquet and Mansell were fourth and fifth, each one lap down.

Nelson Piquet set the fastest lap at 1:19.360 on lap 64, so Berger’s victory was not built on the single quickest lap but on keeping the Pirelli-equipped B186 moving while rivals interrupted their races for fresh tires.

It was Berger’s first Formula One World Championship victory and the first for Benetton as a constructor, achieved in the team’s debut season after the Benetton organization took over Toleman.

The official archive and independent race reports agree on the podium and record no later penalty that changed it.
