Racing | Formula 1 | 1982 Monaco Grand Prix — Patrese Recovers to Take His First Win

On 23 May 1982, the sixth round of the Formula One World Championship began on the streets of Monte Carlo, where Riccardo Patrese started second in the number 2 Brabham-Ford.

René Arnoux had taken pole in 1:23.281. Patrese later recorded the race’s fastest lap, 1:26.354 on lap 69, but the result was decided by an extraordinary sequence after light rain reached the circuit near the finish.

Alain Prost led into lap 74 before crashing after the harbour chicane. Patrese inherited first place, then spun at the Loews hairpin on lap 75 and appeared to have lost the race. Grandprix.com’s contemporary-history account records that marshals moved his stopped Brabham from a dangerous position; as the car rolled downhill, Patrese was able to restart it and continue.

Didier Pironi passed into the lead, but his Ferrari stopped on the final lap. Andrea de Cesaris also stopped before completing the full distance, while Derek Daly’s damaged Williams could not begin the last lap. Patrese, back under power, completed lap 76 and crossed the line without initially knowing whether he had won.

Formula 1’s final classification records Patrese first in 1:54:11.259. Pironi and de Cesaris were officially classified second and third after completing 75 laps, despite both being listed as non-finishers. Nigel Mansell and Elio de Angelis followed, each one lap behind, with Daly classified sixth after 74 laps. No later penalty in the official record alters that order.

The victory was Patrese’s first in the Formula One World Championship. It came five years after his championship debut at the same event and began a six-win career that continued through 1992.

The race used Monaco’s 3.312-kilometre 1976–1985 street configuration. The pin uses the circuit’s published coordinate at 43.735487573178666, 7.421124446354916, on Boulevard Albert Ier, the documented start-and-finish straight.
