American History X|Archie's Ranch Market — The Aisle Where the Film Stops Arguing

Up to this point the film has let Derek talk. He is articulate, he is on television, he has an answer for everything. Then the D.O.C. goes through a neighbourhood grocery store that employs immigrant workers, and Kaye simply films it — shelves going over, produce on the floor, a man in an apron with his hands up, a woman shoved into a chest freezer. Nobody makes a speech. It is the moment the movie stops arguing with Derek and starts showing you what the argument produces.

The store was Archie's Ranch Market at 7500 Lankershim Boulevard in North Hollywood, out in the flat commercial stretch of the east Valley where Lankershim runs past body shops and taquerias. Independent markets like Archie's were the spine of that neighbourhood — family-owned, cash-heavy, staffed by whoever lived within walking distance. Choosing a real one instead of a dressed set gave the scene its specificity: the brands on the shelves are the brands that were on the shelves.

Archie's is gone. The building is still there and now houses a fitness club, so what you get is the shell — the same footprint, the same loading side, the same parking apron off Lankershim. It looks like nothing. That is worth the trip in a way that a preserved location would not be, because the film's whole point about the Valley in 1997 is that this happened in places that looked like nothing.

Park on Lankershim, walk the frontage, and try to place where the registers were. Then look at what is open on the block now, and who is working the counter.
