American History X|Johnie's Coffee Shop — The Last Breakfast, Under a Roof That Never Reopened

On the last morning, Derek and Danny stop for breakfast. It is the closest the film ever gets to peace — two brothers in a booth, the older one finally out from under the thing he built, talking about what happens next. Neither of them knows that this is the last conversation.

They are sitting in Johnie's, at the corner of Wilshire Boulevard and Fairfax Avenue. Louis Armet and Eldon Davis designed it in 1956, when it opened as Romeo's Times Square: a folded-plate roof that lifts off the corner like a wing, a glass wall running the length of the sidewalk, the whole vocabulary of Googie deployed on the Miracle Mile so drivers could read it at thirty-five miles an hour. It served coffee continuously until 2000. It has never served coffee since.

The building survives because people fought for it. Los Angeles designated it Historic-Cultural Monument in November 2013, which is why the roof still hangs over an empty dining room instead of a parking structure. In the decades since it closed it has earned a second living as a film set and, in 2016 and 2020, as a presidential campaign office. The counter stools are still in there. So is the sign.

Stand on the Fairfax corner at dusk and the geometry does its old job — the roofline throws itself out over the sidewalk and the whole thing reads as motion. LACMA's Urban Light is one block east, so the crowd is here; almost none of them look up at the diner. Look up. The best-preserved Googie coffee shop on Wilshire is a locked room where two brothers ate their last meal together.
