Nation History | Namibia | Independence — The Windhoek Stadium Where the Flag Rose at Midnight

As 20 March turned into 21 March 1990, tens of thousands waited inside Windhoek Athletics Stadium. The South African flag was lowered, Namibia’s new flag was raised, and church bells and fireworks marked the legal beginning of independence after decades of colonial rule. The ceremony was an endpoint to more than a century of conquest and resistance, not a sudden gift. Germany had claimed the territory in 1884 and committed genocide against Ovaherero and Nama communities in 1904–08; South Africa occupied it in 1915, administered it under a League of Nations mandate from 1921, and later imposed apartheid. International law had already rejected that rule. The United Nations ended South Africa’s mandate in 1966, and the International Court of Justice held in 1971 that South Africa’s continuing presence was illegal, but armed conflict and diplomatic deadlock continued. The implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 435 finally brought a supervised transition in 1989. More than 90 percent of registered voters took part in the Constituent Assembly election; SWAPO won 41 of 72 seats, short of the two-thirds required to write the constitution alone, so the founding document emerged through negotiation among elected parties. That Constitution was adopted before independence and came into force at midnight on 21 March 1990. At the stadium, Sam Nujoma was sworn in as the republic’s first president, and the public ritual joined a change in flags to a new constitutional order rather than treating liberation as the achievement of one leader alone. The venue itself then changed name from Windhoek Athletics Stadium to Independence Stadium. Yet the boundary of the new state was not identical to today’s: Walvis Bay and twelve offshore islands remained under South African control until their transfer to Namibia on 1 March 1994. What survives at the Olympia site is therefore both an active civic place and an unfinished historical argument. Independence ended illegal external rule and created representative institutions, but it did not erase the unequal landholding, labor systems, and racial divisions produced under German and South African administration.

The present main gate identifies the stadium’s post-1990 name, though it does not reproduce the midnight ceremony. Public reporting on 24 May and 2 July 2026 described the neglected venue as being in final design and procurement stages for a major rebuild, so this pin marks the stadium itself without implying unrestricted entry or completed renovation.
