An eleven-storey block in white tile on 瑞光路, glass stair tower on one corner, a green mark near the roofline. At night the whole thing lights from inside, which is why people in 內湖 used to point it out. It came into use at the end of 1999: about 3,877 square metres of ground, eleven floors up and three down, some 27,000 square metres of floor, 49.7 metres tall. It is the head office of 仁寶電腦, Compal Electronics, and almost certainly nobody has ever bought anything with that name on it. Compal was founded in 1984 and belongs to the 金仁寶 group alongside 金寶電子. 許潮英 chaired it until he retired in 1994, and 許勝雄 has chaired it since. Here is the fact that makes this street worth standing on. In 2008 Taiwanese companies built more than nine tenths of the world's notebook computers, and five of them accounted for eighty-eight per cent of global shipments. Quanta, Compal, Wistron, Inventec, Pegatron. The Taiwanese press calls them 電子五哥, the five big brothers of electronics, and none of their names has ever appeared on a laptop lid. Compal's year was 2009. Netbooks were cheap to make and selling through a recession, Acer and Dell orders came in, and it shipped 37.9 million notebooks against Quanta's 35.9 million. That was first place in the world, on revenue of NT$636.8 billion. Forbes covered it as a story about the other man losing his crown. The position has swapped back since. Compal now runs second on about sixteen per cent of notebook shipments, building for Lenovo, HP and Dell at the same time. Building for three rival brands at once is only possible for a company that has no brand of its own to protect. That constraint is the whole business, and it is why the buildings in this trade are anonymous by design. Very little of the actual manufacturing is in Taiwan. The capacity sits in 崑山 above all, with Vietnam licensed in 2007, Poland and Brazil in 2008 and Mexico added in 2023. What 瑞光路 holds is the head, not the hands: engineering, purchasing, the people who talk to Dell. The building is now too small. Staff have spilled into rented offices nearby, and the group signed for a site in the 北投士林科技園區 in January 2022 and broke ground on 8 February 2023 on a 55-storey, 266-metre tower designed by 李祖原, for more than NT$30 billion. Completion was set for the end of 2026, and reporting in early 2026 suggested 2027. When it opens, this white block will stop being the address. It is an ordinary working office on an ordinary technology-park street, with no visitor access and nothing to see but the outside of it. That is the correct impression to leave with.
