The Hobbit | Pelorus River — Barrels Under the Beech Trees

The prison escape begins as a joke with no room to breathe: dwarves folded into barrels, dropped through trapdoors and sent spinning into open water. On the Pelorus River, the escape briefly becomes beautiful. Clear green current slides beneath native forest while the Company floats downstream before the chase gathers its teeth.

This stretch supplied the river work for The Desolation of Smaug. At Pelorus Bridge Scenic Reserve, the water can be seen from public riverside walks, and guided kayak trips offer another lawful way to experience the setting. The current, rocks and water level are real; this is not a place to imitate the stunt in a barrel. Follow Department of Conservation signs and use established swimming or paddling guidance for the day.

The film fills the banks with orcs and arrows. The river needs none of them. Its calm surface holds the comic beginning of the escape—and the instant before survival turns violent again.
