Technology History | 代々木公園 — The Press Conference Where Nobody Spoke

Sony put the reporters on buses, drove them to this park, and then stopped talking.
Each journalist was handed a TPS-L2 and a pair of headphones, and the explanation of the product arrived through the headphones as a recording.
Around them Sony staff rode tandem bicycles and skateboards in silence, demonstrating a machine that made no sound anyone else could hear.
Passers-by could not tell what was happening. That was the point, and it was also the problem.
The press event ran in June 1979, with several accounts dating it to the 22nd, and the machine went on sale on 1 July at ¥33,000.
The reporters were unimpressed. A tape player that could not record struck them as a step down from the Pressman, the recorder they used for work and the machine the Walkman had been built out of.
About 3,000 units sold in the first month, against an initial production run of 30,000.
So Sony came back to the park. Through that summer young staff walked into 代々木公園 on Sundays with Walkmans clipped to their belts, stopped strangers, and offered them the headphones.
The 30,000 was gone by the end of the summer.
Two features of the first machine came out of the same worry. It had two headphone jacks, and an orange button that cut the music and opened a microphone so two listeners could talk, because 盛田昭夫 (Akio Morita) thought listening alone in public would be rude.
Buyers ignored both, and later models dropped them.
The park is public, free and open all day. This is a park-scale pin: no account gives a spot within it, and nothing on the ground marks one.
