Technology History | 数寄屋橋交差点 — Sony Left the Corner Empty for Three Years

Sony's showroom stood on this corner for fifty-one years, and its replacement took nearly eight.

芦原義信 (Yoshinobu Ashihara) completed the ソニービル here in 1966, facing the 数寄屋橋 crossing, and built it as a spiral rather than a stack.

The floors were offset by half a level so the interior wound upward as a continuous route, an idea Sony's own account calls a vertical promenade, in a building meant to be open to the street.

The showroom closed in 2017.

What Sony did next is the part worth the pin. Instead of demolishing and rebuilding straight through, it stopped halfway.

From August 2018 to September 2021 the half-demolished site operated as a public park — free, open, nothing to buy, nothing going up.

Construction then resumed. The new building was completed on 15 August 2024 and opened on 26 January 2025, keeping the name Ginza Sony Park.

It runs four floors down and five up in exposed concrete, and it is deliberately built to about half the height a Ginza plot of this value would carry.

There are no permanent tenants. The floors hold activities that change, the ground floor runs into the crossing without a threshold, and admission is free.

A showroom's job is to hold your attention until you buy something. This one gave the floor area back instead.

ソニーのショールームは51年間この角に建っていた。その建て替えには8年近くかかっている。

芦原義信が「ソニービル」をここに完成させたのは1966年。数寄屋橋交差点に面し、積み上げるのではなく螺旋として組まれた建物だった。

フロアを半階ずつずらすことで内部が一続きの道のように上がっていく——ソニー自身の説明が「縦のプロムナード」と呼ぶ考え方で、街に開かれた施設としてつくられている。

ショールームは2017年に営業を終えた。

その次にソニーがしたことが、この地点を記録する理由だ。解体してすぐ建てるのではなく、途中で手を止めた。

2018年8月から2021年9月まで、半分解体された敷地はそのまま公園として開かれていた。入場無料、売り場なし、工事もなし。

そのあと工事が再開する。新しい建物は2024年8月15日に竣工し、2025年1月26日に「Ginza Sony Park」の名のまま開業した。

地下4階・地上5階、コンクリート打ちっぱなし。銀座の標準的な建物のおよそ半分の高さに、あえて低く構えている。

常設のテナントはない。各フロアで内容の変わるアクティビティが行われ、1階は敷居なしで交差点につながり、入場は無料である。

ショールームの仕事は、客が何かを買うまで注意を引きつけておくことだ。この建物は、その床面積のほうを返した。
