Racing | Formula 1 | 2023 Qatar Grand Prix — Verstappen Secures His Third Title in the Lusail Sprint
kevin
On Saturday evening at Lusail International Circuit, Oscar Piastri started the 2023 Qatar Grand Prix Sprint from pole for McLaren, while Max Verstappen lined up third for Oracle Red Bull Racing with the Drivers’ Championship within reach.
Verstappen’s only remaining mathematical rival was his teammate Sergio Pérez, whose retirement in a three-car incident with Esteban Ocon and Nico Hülkenberg made Verstappen’s points lead uncatchable before the 19-lap Sprint had finished.
Piastri had chosen medium tyres, and George Russell used the softer compound to pass him early, but the McLaren driver reclaimed the lead as Russell’s tyres faded during a contest interrupted by three Safety Car periods.
Verstappen recovered from a slow opening phase, passed Russell after the final restart and reached second place, yet Piastri controlled the closing laps and won by 1.871 seconds.
The official classification recorded Piastri first in 35 minutes 1.297 seconds, Verstappen second and Lando Norris third, giving McLaren two places on the Sprint podium and confirming Verstappen as World Champion for the third consecutive season.
Charles Leclerc and Lance Stroll each received five-second penalties for repeated track-limit infringements, moving them to twelfth and fifteenth respectively; the penalties did not alter the podium or the championship outcome.
The memory is pinned to the start-and-finish complex of Lusail’s resurfaced 2023 Grand Prix layout, a clockwise 5.419-kilometre circuit with 16 turns, rather than to a generic point in Doha or to the earlier 5.380-kilometre configuration.
Piastri’s first Formula 1 Sprint victory and Verstappen’s third title therefore became part of the same place-anchored moment: one young driver converted pole into a breakthrough Saturday win, while another completed a third straight championship campaign.
