People treat Financial Engines as a Palo Alto idea that was always public.

Two dates do the actual work.

The firm was incorporated in California on 13 May 1996.

Silicon Valley Business Journal later recorded Maggioncalda as the first employee that same year, hired into a company co-founded by Nobel economist William Sharpe, Joseph Grundfest, and Craig Johnson.

The office that held the books through the IPO sat at 1804 Embarcadero Road in Palo Alto.

The public moment was not on Embarcadero.

On 16 March 2010 PLANSPONSOR and the company's own release said Maggioncalda would ring the Nasdaq opening bell remotely from San Jose at 9:30 a.m. Eastern.

The ceremony played on the seven-story Nasdaq MarketSite tower in Times Square, at 4 Times Square.

This pin is that tower, not the San Jose room and not a private house.

The New York Times DealBook desk reported the offering the same morning: 10.6 million shares at 12 dollars, about 127.7 million dollars raised, above a 9-to-11 range.

PLANSPONSOR's update put the first-day close at 17.25, up 5.25, or 43.8 percent.

The ticker was FNGN.

He ran the firm as founding chief executive until early 2015.

The headquarters later moved to Moffett Towers in Sunnyvale.

The first print on a public tape belongs to this screen in Times Square.
