Iris|Cheonggyecheon — The Recovered Stream Under the Gunfight City

Before the plaza became a firing range, Iris had already put Seoul's restored water on screen. Cheonggyecheon runs a few minutes south of Gwanghwamun, a concrete channel that used to be a buried highway and is now a public creek with stepping stones, evening lights, and office workers eating kimbap on the banks.

Seoul City named the stream, the Han River, and the Sejong statue as the landmarks it wanted the series to carry abroad. The bargain was simple. Let the cameras into civic space, and the civic space would leave the country with Lee Byung-hun. Cheonggyecheon was the quiet half of that deal. Agents walk it. Meetings happen under the bridges. The water does not care who is armed.

Start at Cheonggye Plaza, where the stream begins under the spring sculpture, and walk east. The noise of the road lifts off your shoulders within a hundred meters. At night the lights under the bridges turn the water into a second street. That is the version the drama used: a capital that could look expensive and ordinary in the same shot.

You will not find a plaque for Kim Hyun-jun here. You will find the same walk the city sold in 2009, still open, still free, still colder than the plaza above it when the sun drops behind the office towers.
