Heartstrings | Ihwa Mural Village — The Painted Hill Below Naksan

Not every Heartstrings exterior is a palace roof. Some of the campus walks leak into a hillside that painters covered in 2006 and that cameras have used ever since.

Ihwa Mural Village hangs on the Naksan slope between Hyehwa and Dongdaemun, at about 37.5777 north, 127.0047 east. The Ministry of Culture's Naksan Project brought dozens of artists onto walls, stairs, and underpasses in a neighborhood that had been slated to vanish. The famous flower steps have been damaged and debated. Enough murals remain that the hill still reads as an outdoor gallery.

The series needed color behind students who spend their days in practice rooms. Ihwa supplied it without leaving central Seoul. You climb from Hyehwa Station Exit 2, past the restaurant strip, then up. Residents still live in the painted houses. The correct visit is a quiet one: no doorway shots, no standing on stoops, no calling across the alley to a friend with a camera.

From the upper lanes Naksan Park takes over and the city drops away toward Dongdaemun. That drop is the shot. Heartstrings was a music-school romance. This hill is what the city looks like when the school day ends and the students walk home through someone else's walls.
