Heartstrings | Bukchon Hanok Village — The Roof Line Behind the Gayageum Student

Gyu-won studies traditional Korean music. The drama needed streets that still look as if a gayageum case belongs on them.

Bukchon sits between Gyeongbokgung and Changdeokgung, a residential grid of tiled roofs that drops toward the downtown towers. The usual pilgrimage viewpoint is Bukchon-ro 11-gil, a few minutes uphill from Anguk Station Exit 2, near 37.5826 north, 126.9831 east. The alleys are public. The houses are not. Signs ask visitors to keep their voices down after evening and to stay off private stoops.

Heartstrings used this fabric the way many 2011 romances did: as the city that still remembers court music. Park Shin-hye's character comes from a family that treats the gayageum as inheritance. Bukchon is the neighborhood that makes that inheritance visible without a costume department. Grey tiles, chimney stacks, a slope that forces you to walk slower than a Seoul sidewalk usually allows.

Come on a weekday morning. The light hits the roofs before the tour groups fill the stair. You will not find a plaque for this series. You will find the same roofline the cameras borrowed, and a reminder that traditional majors in this city still live within walking distance of the palaces that first paid for their instruments.
