Biography|Elliott Hill — The Sports Admin Classroom Where He Chased Nike for Six Months

The turning point in Elliott Hill's working life did not happen in Beaverton. It happened in a sports-marketing classroom on this Athens campus.

After the 1986 TCU degree and a short stretch as a graduate assistant trainer with the Dallas Cowboys, he enrolled at Ohio University for a master's in sports administration. Bloomberg still lists both schools. TCU and the Fort Worth Star-Telegram put the Ohio degree in sports administration.

Ohio University's program sits in the College of Business. Copeland Hall, at 70 South Court Street, is the college's long-standing home on the uptown edge of campus.

In that program he wrote a paper on Nike. Then a Nike executive named Tim Joyce came to lecture. Hill approached him after class and asked for work.

The Star-Telegram's version is blunt: he badgered Joyce for six months before the internship appeared. Nike's own later magazine profile dates the first day to 1 June 1988 and places it in Memphis.

The internship title was apparel sales representative. It was not a glamorous posting. It was the door.

From that door he stayed inside Nike for thirty-two years, through sales, Europe, North American retail, and the presidency of Consumer and Marketplace, before stepping away in 2020.

Ohio University still markets the sports administration program as one of the oldest of its kind. The building a visitor sees is Copeland Hall, later expanded and still used by the college. The lecture room from 1987 or 1988 is not marked.

A kinesiology graduate from Fort Worth used this master's program to convert a paper on a brand into a job at that brand, and then did not leave.
