He finished school in a Baldwin County farm town.
Timothy Donald Cook was born in Mobile on 1 November 1960.
His father, Donald, worked as a shipyard foreman at the Alabama Dry Dock and Shipbuilding Company.
His mother, Geraldine, worked in a pharmacy.
The family lived briefly in Mobile and in Pensacola, then settled in Robertsdale so the three sons could attend one school.
The town had about 2,300 people when they arrived.
Cook was salutatorian of Robertsdale High School's class of 1978.
Public accounts give the class year, not a ceremony day.
The 1978 yearbook, which he worked on as business manager, listed him as most studious from the seventh grade through the twelfth.
He played trombone in the Golden Bear marching band.
He also delivered newspapers before school.
The public campus still stands at 1 Golden Bear Drive.
The buildings have been enlarged since 1978.
