Biography|Massimo Calvelli — The Flinders Park Semi-Final That Marked the Junior Ceiling
kevin
The 1991 Australian Open was held from 14 to 27 January at the National Tennis Centre at Flinders Park, the hard-court complex later renamed Melbourne Park.
Centre Court had opened three years earlier.
The junior draw that fortnight is the first place Calvelli's name appears on a Grand Slam sheet.
German-language tournament records of the boys' singles list him in the semi-finals.
He lost there to Stephen Gleeson, 3-6, 2-6.
Gleeson went on to the final and lost to Thomas Enqvist.
The same records show Calvelli coming through his half of the draw, including a win over Joshua Eagle, the second seed, on the way to that semi-final.
He was sixteen.
The result is easy to flatten into a line on a biography page.
Standing at the park makes the scale clearer.
A Tuscan junior had reached the last four of a major boys' event on Rebound Ace, then gone home to a short professional career that peaked at No. 255.
He turned professional the following year.
The venue itself has been rebuilt around the same footprint.
Flinders Park became Melbourne Park.
Centre Court became Rod Laver Arena.
Junior matches in 1991 were spread across the outer courts of the same precinct, not necessarily on the centre stadium that now carries Laver's name.
The pin is the tennis centre, not a single chair.
What the fortnight records is a ceiling, not a launch.
He did not become a tour regular from this semi-final.
Nearly three decades later he was the executive who ran the tour that had once printed his name in a junior draw.
