People treat a fifteen-year Apple tenure as a job that only ended with a founder.
Cook's last day as chief executive was a dated handoff at the newer campus.
On 20 April 2026 Apple announced that Cook would become executive chairman and that John Ternus, senior vice president of hardware engineering, would become chief executive on 1 September 2026.
The board had approved the change on 17 April.
Apple's Form 8-K filed the next day records the dates.
Arthur Levinson, non-executive chairman since 2011, became lead independent director on the same September morning.
Ternus joined the board that day.
The announcement photograph was taken at Apple Park.
The ring building at 1 Apple Park Way had opened to staff in 2017 and replaced Infinite Loop as headquarters.
Cook had held the chief-executive title from 24 August 2011 through 31 August 2026.
He remains at the company as executive chairman.
The park is a corporate campus, not a private house.
