Biography | Roland Busch — First Siemens Badge on This Research Yard

People treat a Siemens career as if it begins in a Munich boardroom.

The first company date is a project desk in Erlangen.

In 1994, the year after the physics doctorate, Roland Busch joined Siemens AG as a project head in the Corporate Research and Development Department.

The official Siemens CV, the archived managing-board biography, and the Munich Re curriculum all place that first posting in Erlangen.

The research yard in the south of the city had been inaugurated on 26 May 1965 by Siemens-Schuckertwerke.

It was a closed campus of laboratories, test tracks, and workshop blocks, not the glass promenade a visitor sees now.

This pin sits on the rebuilt Siemens Campus around Siemenspromenade, on the same former research ground.

Bau 32, a surviving laboratory block photographed on the old Forschungszentrum, stands as a reminder that the 1994 site was a yard of numbered buildings rather than a public street.

From 2016 the company demolished and rebuilt most of that closed campus as an open district.

The text has to say so: the visitor will not find the 1994 corridors behind the original fences.

The first year was short.

In 1995 he moved to the Automotive Systems Group in Regensburg as a fuel-cell specialist, and from 1997 as an assistant to that group's executive management.

The Erlangen research badge still matters because it is the documented start of a single-employer career that has not left Siemens.

Later titles — strategy, VDO, mass transit, the managing board, the chair — stack on this date.

Stand at the new promenade and the sequence is industrial rather than ceremonial.

A physicist from the palace square walked south into the company's own laboratories, in the town where he was born.
