Along Came a Spider|Washington Union Station — where the timetable becomes the villain's clock

Come in through the front doors on a weekday morning and the noise arrives before the room does: wheeled luggage on marble, a departure board flipping, somebody's coffee order shouted across the concourse. Then you look up. Daniel Burnham's barrel vault runs ninety-six feet overhead, coffered and gilded, built in 1907 for a city that wanted its railway station to feel like a triumphal arch. The Roman legionaries on the balcony have been standing guard for more than a century. Nobody looks at them.

The makers of Along Came a Spider shot here, inside and out, and the choice tells you what kind of thriller they wanted. Gary Soneji's crime is deliberately modelled on the Lindbergh kidnapping — an old American nightmare, replayed. A kidnapping plot needs somewhere the whole city passes through, somewhere a person can be watched and lost in the same thirty seconds. Union Station is that place by design. Every sightline is long. Every corner has three exits.

Stand at the top of the steps that lead down to the gates and you can see how it works on a camera. The hall funnels people. It gives you crowds without chaos, and it gives you a clock — literal, overhead, always counting down. Outside, the Columbus Memorial Fountain sits in the plaza with the Capitol dome lined up behind it down Delaware Avenue, which is why so many productions come out through those doors instead of arriving.

Go at rush hour rather than midday. The building is more honest when it is busy, and the moment you notice is the one the film was after: you look up at the gold ceiling, you look back down, and the person who was standing beside you has already gone.
