Biography|Ralph Hamers — The Abbey School at Rolduc Where Limburg Sent Its Catholic Boys

The Catholic boys of eastern Limburg did not stay in the village for secondary school.

They went to Rolduc.

The abbey sits on the edge of Kerkrade, a few kilometres from Simpelveld, on the Dutch side of a line that once split the old territory of Rode between the Netherlands and Prussia.

Hamers attended the Catholic gymnasium here.

Rolduc is a medieval foundation. The present complex is a rijksmonument: abbey church, cloister, eighteenth-century wings, a walled cemetery, and a school that in his years still carried the name College Rolduc.

The Jesuits had run a famous boarding school on the site in the nineteenth century. By the late twentieth century it was a diocesan gymnasium of the kind that fed Tilburg, Nijmegen, and the Dutch civil service.

A published biographical file records a Catholic upbringing he later described as formative. The school is the building that made that upbringing institutional.

This is a border education, not a Randstad one.

From here the next documented stop is Tilburg University and a master's in business econometrics. Then a brief research post at the same university, a logistics job at General Motors near Antwerp, a stretch in accountancy in Thunder Bay, and an ABN Amro traineeship in 1989.

The abbey is still there. The secondary school on the grounds now operates as Charlemagne College.

Visitors can walk the cloister and the church. The classrooms are a working school, not a museum.
