Along Came a Spider|Cleveland Dam, North Vancouver — ninety metres of concrete with the Lions above it

Park off Capilano Road, walk five minutes through second-growth forest, and the trees open onto a concrete crest you can stroll straight across. On the upstream side, Capilano Lake sits flat and dark against the mountains. On the downstream side the ground simply stops — a ninety-one metre drop into the canyon, with the spillway cut into the rock and the Capilano River reassembling itself far below. Look north and the twin summits of the Lions stand directly over the reservoir. It is one of the few places in Greater Vancouver where infrastructure and wilderness are in the same frame and neither one wins.

The dam was completed in 1954 and named for Ernest Cleveland, the first chief commissioner of the Greater Vancouver Water District, the man who argued the region into treating its watersheds as a public asset. The lake behind it is drinking water for hundreds of thousands of people, which is why the far shore is closed and patrolled and why the whole thing feels oddly hushed for a piece of industrial engineering.

Along Came a Spider filmed here, and the appeal to a thriller crew is obvious the moment you stand on the crest. Long clean lines. A sheer vertical you can put an actor beside. No way to fake that drop on a stage, and no way for an audience to mistake it for anything but real.

Come after heavy autumn rain, when the spillway is actually running. The sound arrives up through the concrete before you see the water, a low continuous pressure under your feet, and the mist off the canyon drifts back over the walkway. Then follow the trail down the east bank toward the fish hatchery and look back up at the dam from below. From that angle it stops being a viewpoint and becomes a wall.
