Along Came a Spider|Lincoln Memorial, east steps — the city's confessional, filmed from the front

Washington's film location records put the production on the east side of the Lincoln Memorial, which is the side that matters. West is the river and the traffic. East is the Reflecting Pool, the long climb, and the view every visitor arrives already carrying in their head.
The building opened in 1922. Thirty-six columns, one for each state at Lincoln's death, and a floor plan that Henry Bacon borrowed from a Greek temple and then made larger than the source. Daniel Chester French's seated figure is nineteen feet high and was carved from twenty-eight blocks of Georgia marble fitted so precisely that from the steps it reads as a single stone. Climb far enough and the light changes: the Mall's glare drops away and the chamber goes cool and grey, and the noise of the crowd flattens into a hush people impose on themselves without being asked.
Along Came a Spider is a film about a man who reads people for a living and has stopped trusting what he reads. Its Washington is not the postcard — it is a working city where power is close enough to touch and the case files are personal. The east steps give a director that in one shot. Turn around at the top and the whole axis of American self-presentation is laid out in front of you, and it is impossible to stand there and not feel watched by it.
Go before seven in the morning. The rangers are on duty, the tour buses are not, and the Reflecting Pool holds the memorial upside down without a ripple in it. Read the inscription of the Second Inaugural on the north wall while it is quiet. Then find the step, eighteen down from the top, marked where King stood in 1963 — a small engraved line in the granite that most of the crowd walks straight over.
