Along Came a Spider|United States Capitol, West Front — the terrace a senator's daughter grows up beneath

The West Front is the side of the Capitol that faces away from the government and toward the country. Presidents have been sworn in on these steps since 1981. The terraces below were Frederick Law Olmsted's idea, added in the 1880s to give the building a proper base, and on a clear afternoon they are the best free seat in Washington: the Mall running west, the Washington Monument dead centre, the Lincoln Memorial a pale smudge beyond it.

Along Came a Spider used the dome and this front, and the reason is structural rather than scenic. The film's crime is political before it is personal — the child taken is a senator's daughter, and the machinery that closes around the case is federal. You need one image that carries all of that without a word of dialogue. This is it. Cast iron painted to look like stone, nearly nine million pounds of it, holding up a statue whose face is turned east so that the sunrise finds her first.

Walk the terrace at the northwest corner and put your hand on the balustrade. It is warmer than it looks. From here the building stops being a symbol and becomes what it actually is: a very large office with a very good view, ringed by people eating lunch on the grass and Capitol Police who have seen every kind of visitor. The tour queue forms on the east side, underground, at the Visitor Center; the west lawn asks nothing of you at all.

Come near sunset in autumn. The dome goes from white to bone to amber in about twenty minutes, and the crowd thins out until it is mostly locals with dogs. That gap — monumental architecture, ordinary evening — is exactly the register the film was reaching for.
