Biography | Todd Howard — Emmaus High School, Where a Lower Macungie Kid Graduated in 1989

People who know Todd Howard as the man behind Skyrim tend to start the story in a convention hall.
The first public building that shaped him is a large suburban high school on Macungie Avenue in Emmaus, Pennsylvania.
He was born in 1970 in Lower Macungie Township, the district this school still serves. Public sources disagree on the exact day of birth, so the year is the honest figure.
Emmaus High School sits at 500 Macungie Avenue, a few miles south of Allentown.
Howard graduated here in 1989.
The Lehigh Valley is not a game-industry town. What it did have, in the late 1970s and 1980s, was a generation of kids who met computers at home and role-playing games in bedrooms.
He has said in later interviews that the early computer RPGs Wizardry and Ultima III: Exodus were the titles that pointed him at the work he later did.
Those games taught a simple lesson: a world can be larger than the screen if the player is allowed to wander.
The campus is an ordinary East Penn public school, rebuilt and expanded since his years.
A visitor will not find a plaque with his name. The pin is still the right one, because this is the last local institution before he left for Virginia.
The borough of Emmaus and Lower Macungie Township send their teenagers here. That catchment is the only precise public geography attached to his childhood.
From this parking lot the next stop was Williamsburg, then a small office park in Rockville.
