Racing | Formula 1 | 1970 United States Grand Prix — Fittipaldi’s First Win Secures Rindt’s Title

On 4 October 1970, Formula 1 returned to Watkins Glen’s original permanent Grand Prix course for the penultimate round of the World Championship. Emerson Fittipaldi started third in Gold Leaf Team Lotus’s No. 24 Lotus 72C-Ford, behind pole-sitter Jacky Ickx and Jackie Stewart.

Stewart led until retiring after 82 completed laps. Pedro Rodríguez then headed the race for BRM, but his car ran out of fuel late enough to coast into the pits. Fittipaldi moved ahead and completed all 108 laps in 1:57:32.790. The final classification placed Rodríguez second, 36.390 seconds behind, and Fittipaldi’s Lotus teammate Reine Wisell third, 45.170 seconds behind.

The result carried a second meaning. Jochen Rindt had died during practice for the Italian Grand Prix a month earlier, but still led the championship with 45 points. Ickx arrived at Watkins Glen on 28 points as the only driver who could still overtake him, and needed to win both remaining races. A fuel-leak stop dropped Ickx from contention; he recovered to fourth place, one lap down, and scored three points. With only the Mexican Grand Prix left, his maximum possible total became 40. Rindt’s 45 could no longer be reached, making him Formula 1’s first and still only posthumous Drivers’ World Champion.

For Fittipaldi, this was his first World Championship Grand Prix victory and the first by a Brazilian driver. Ickx retained one distinction from the day: the official archive records his fastest lap as 1:02.740 on lap 105.

This was also the final United States Grand Prix on Watkins Glen’s 2.350-mile (3.782-kilometre), eight-turn 1956–1970 configuration. Before the 1971 race, the circuit was widened, resurfaced and extended to 3.377 miles by the new “Boot” section, while the pits and start-finish line moved. The pin marks the permanent circuit property at its published venue coordinates.
