Technology History | Launch Complex 39A — The Landing Has No Address, So This Is the Pin

The Moon landing has no address on Earth. The launch does, and this is it. At 9:32 in the morning on 16 July 1969, a Saturn V lifted off from Pad A of Launch Complex 39 carrying Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins and Buzz Aldrin. The vehicle stood 363 feet. Its five F-1 engines produced about seven and a half million pounds of thrust, and for the first two and a half minutes that was the loudest thing anyone in Brevard County had ever heard. Four days later the lunar module touched down in the Sea of Tranquility, at 4:18 in the afternoon Florida time on 20 July. That moment is the one everybody remembers and it cannot be pinned, which is why this entry sits at the pad rather than at the landing. The complex was built between 1964 and 1968 for a rocket that did not exist yet, and Pad A covers roughly 175 acres on its own. Eleven Apollo-era Saturn V vehicles left from here. So did eighty-two Space Shuttle missions, including STS-1 in 1981 and STS-135 in 2011, which was the last of them. Then the pad went quiet, and what happened next is the part worth knowing before visiting. On 14 April 2014 NASA signed a twenty-year property agreement handing Launch Complex 39A to SpaceX, as part of turning Kennedy from a government-only facility into a spaceport with commercial tenants. The first Falcon Heavy launched from it in 2018, and in May 2020 a Crew Dragon carried astronauts from it to the International Space Station. This is not a preserved site. It is a working launch pad under commercial lease, which means the structure Apollo used is gone and the tower there now belongs to somebody else's rockets. Public access is restricted accordingly. The Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex runs bus tours that view the pad from a distance, and the Saturn V hanging in the Apollo/Saturn V Center is a real one that never flew.
