Reply 1988 | Ssangmun Market — The Aisle That Kept the Address

Deok-sun's house number in the drama is Ssangmun 3-dong 98-38. That number lands inside the working market, not on a studio street.

Ssangmun Market sits one minute from the station, along Dobong-ro 113-gil. Banchan tubs, fish on ice, a clock-shop window that still looks like the shop Choi Taek's father was written from. There was never a jewelry store here called Bonghwangdang. There was a neighborhood that already knew how to squeeze five families into one block and share a pot of stew over the wall.

Shin Won-ho wanted to shoot the alley in Ssangmun-dong and could not. Too many cars. Too many apartment facades that 1988 had not imagined. So the houses went up on an old army lot in Nogyang-dong, Uijeongbu, and came down when the series wrapped. The market did not come down. Dobong-gu's walking signs now point visitors through these aisles instead of toward a set that no longer exists.

Buy something small. A bag of tteokbokki rice cakes. A bundle of chives. The point of this street was never the photograph of five doors. It was the errand you ran for someone else's mother.
