第12話、海夢は浴衣、新菜は甚平で夏祭りへ向かう。屋台の光と花火の下ではしゃいだあと、慣れない下駄で海夢の足は痛み、新菜が背負って帰る。派手な夜の最後に残るのは告白ではなく、相手の重さを黙って受け止める帰り道だ。ふたりの距離は、花火が開いた空よりも、歩けなくなった数百メートルで縮まる。
祭りのモデルとされる秩父神社は番場通りの先にあり、昼は極彩色の彫刻と古い社殿がはっきり見える。夜の場面を思いながら参道を歩くなら、参拝の動線を横切らず、境内の静けさを先に受け取る。石畳の硬さを足裏で感じると、背負われた海夢がなぜ急に素直になったのかが、身体の感覚として残る。
