Gold Leaf | Erjie Granary, Yilan — Whoever Owns the Scale Owns the Farmer

The farmers' association in Gold Leaf — the counter where growers are paid, weighed up and quietly leaned on — is a rice granary in Yilan, a hundred and eighty kilometres from Beipu.

Erjie went up in 1928: three storeys, Japanese structure with Western detailing, built by the local farmers' association to take in, mill and store the rice of the Lanyang plain. It is the most complete Japanese-era warehouse building left in Yilan County, and the reason it works on camera is that the machinery is still inside. The milling floor, the elevators, the chutes, the scales. This was the largest rice processing operation in the county.

A granary and a tea association are not the same trade, but the architecture of the transaction is identical, and that is what the production was after. A farmer brings in a crop he cannot store himself. Somebody else owns the scale. Somebody else sets the grade. The building is designed around that asymmetry — a public counter at the front, and behind it the machines and the space that give the association its power. Gold Leaf is a series about who controls the grading, so the set dressing barely had to lie.

There is a railway line directly behind the building; freight and local trains pass close enough to watch from the yard, which was the point of the siting.

Open daily except Wednesday, small admission that includes a drink. Two hours south of Taipei, and awkward to combine with anything else on this trail — treat it as a Yilan day, not a detour.

Put your hand on the scale housing on the milling floor. Every argument in the drama about what a farmer's leaf is worth was settled on a machine like this one, by whoever owned it.
