People treat Ball as a Westminster, Colorado can maker that prints BALL.
The listed company spent a year off the Big Board.
Ball State University's finding aid and the company's later Form 8-K both record that Ball went public on 13 July 1972 and traded over the counter.
On 17 December 1973 the stock was admitted to the New York Stock Exchange as BLL and began trading at 26 dollars a share in 1973 currency, not split-adjusted.
The company had taken the name Ball Corporation in 1969 after ninety-odd years as a Muncie glass house. In 1969 it also bought Jeffco Manufacturing in Golden, Colorado, and entered beverage cans.
The mechanism is a family manufacturer using an OTC season to put a price on Ball-family holdings, then graduating to the Exchange when that price existed.
On 10 May 2022 the ticker changed from BLL to BALL, fifty years after the 1972 float. Four-letter symbols had not been available at the IPO.
The pin is the Broad Street facade of the Exchange. Corporate offices today are at 9200 West 108th Circle, Westminster.
