Finance History | 11 Wall Street — Energas Took the Big Board Tape as ATO

People treat Atmos as a Dallas glass box on the LBJ Freeway and a regulated gas-only utility.
The listed name is an October 1988 rebrand of a spin-off that Pioneer did not expect to last.
In 1983 Pioneer Corporation cut loose its gas-distribution arm as Energas, an independent public company. Pioneer managers, in later company histories, did not expect the unit to survive on its own.
On 1 October 1988 Energas changed its corporate name to Atmos Energy Corporation. Charles Vaughan picked the word because, he said, it meant gases in the atmosphere in Greek. The same month the stock began trading on the New York Stock Exchange under ATO.
The company itself dates the NYSE move to October 1988 and does not publish a first-print day in its current history page. The mechanism is the point, not a missing session stamp.
A small-city gas distributor that already had a public float moved from a thinner listing onto the Big Board so that acquisition paper would clear in front of institutional buyers. The name change and the tape change arrived together.
Atmos later bought Trans Louisiana Gas, Western Kentucky Gas, and, in October 2004, the distribution and pipeline operations of TXU Gas. The listing was the currency for that string of deals.
The headquarters sit at 1800 Three Lincoln Centre, 5430 LBJ Freeway, Dallas. The pin for this memory is the exchange where ATO first printed, the Broad Street facade of 11 Wall Street, visible from the public sidewalk.
