People treat Ares as a Century City credit machine and a later S and P 500 weight.

The public share arrived after a private-credit book had already grown inside another firm's West Coast affiliate.

Antony Ressler, John Kissick and Bennett Rosenthal formed Ares in 1997 to manage a 1.2 billion dollar market-value collateralized debt obligation, operating at first as Apollo's West Coast credit arm.

The firm announced a corporate separation when it raised its first corporate-opportunities fund in 2002.

On 2 May 2014 Ares Management LP priced its initial public offering at 19 dollars a share, below a marketed range of 21 to 23 dollars.

Bloomberg recorded that the firm raised 216 million dollars in 2014 currency. The new units closed at 18.60 dollars, down 2.1 percent on the first print.

It was the first major alternative-asset manager to list since Carlyle in 2012.

Senior professional owners were not selling into the deal and were expected to hold about 70 percent after the offering.

The mechanism is a credit-first alternatives firm selling a minority public stub while leaving control, and the fee stream, with the founding partners.
