Dynastic History | Patriarchal Cathedral, Tsarevets — Rebuilt as an Exhibit, Never Consecrated

The Bulgarian patriarch's seat stood at the top of this hill inside its own walled compound, with two towers and a gate in its west wall: a fortress within the fortress of Tsarevets. The church began in the late 11th or 12th century as a monastery church, raised directly on the footings of a late Roman basilica, and was already the patriarch's seat early in the 12th. Kaloyan had the relics of Michael the Warrior brought here — a warrior saint installed in the capital's cathedral during a reign spent at war with Byzantines and Latins. After fire damage it was rebuilt around the middle of the 14th century with an outer narthex and a bell tower, the tower unusual in Balkan church architecture. Evtimiy, the last patriarch of Tarnovo, called it the great patriarchal cathedral of the Holy Ascension. It was destroyed after the Ottoman capture of the city on 17 July 1393.

What stands now is a 20th-century building. Excavation ran from 1960 to 1965; reconstruction followed through the 1970s and into the 1980s, and Teofan Sokerov painted the interior in a modernist idiom, with episodes from medieval Bulgarian history in place of a conventional Orthodox scheme. The church was completed, painted and opened to visitors in 1985. It has never been consecrated. The Orthodox magazine Svet reports that clergy of the Veliko Tarnovo diocese objected to the murals not on artistic grounds but as canonically improper, and that the interior was laid out without the arrangement the liturgy requires.

Published figures for the compound diverge — roughly 2,400 square metres in the municipality's account, nearer 3,000 in others — so they are best read as approximations. The hill is ticketed, and the cathedral is entered as an exhibit rather than a church.
