21 & Over | Lewis Hall — The hospital that was never a hospital

The whole night exists because of one appointment: a medical school interview the next morning, arranged by a father who did not ask. When the film finally arrives at that building, it is not a medical centre at all. The university's own alumni magazine gave the trick away years later — the medical centre in 21 and Over is Lewis Hall, a dormitory.

Lewis Hall went up in 1896, part of the first cluster of buildings on the present campus alongside Denny Hall and its twin, Clark Hall. It housed men; Clark housed women; the two stood facing each other across the north end of the grounds in matching stone, and both have since been renovated into offices and classrooms. The heavy masonry and deep window reveals read on camera as institutional authority, which is exactly what the scene needs and exactly what a hospital corridor would have cost to build.

There is something fitting about it. The place where Jeff Chang is supposed to hand over his future to his father's plan is a building that spent a century being told what to be — dormitory, then offices, then a hospital for two days in 2011.

Find it on the north side of campus, a short walk from Denny Hall. It is not signposted for visitors and nothing marks the filming. Stand at the entrance and look at the doorway, then watch the scene again.
